Looker, founded in 2011 by Lloyd Tabb, helps companies to easily extract and analyze data. Most legacy business intelligence systems at the time required users to have engineering and programming expertise to extract data and analyze it. Looker simplified the process by taking programming queries and modifying them to read more like natural languages, such as English.

Products and services

Calico was founded as a Google project in 2013 by Bill Maris, an entrepreneur and venture capitalist who also served as the company’s VP of Special Projects. The current CEO of Calico is Arthur D. Levinson who is also the Chairman of Apple Inc. After Doctoroff stepped down due to poor health in late 2021, Sidewalk Labs was folded into Google. The company’s core products were subsequently incorporated into Google’s urban sustainability efforts, with Alphabet also spinning out Sidewalk’s Canopy Buildings project as an independent company. However, Google Cloud’s BigQuery tool for large database management had performed well and the acquisition was seen as a way for the company to double down on analytics. The company was initially headquartered in Mountain View, California, but later moved to San Mateo.

Android Police

The purpose of the company was to make developing mobile apps easier and contained a variety of tools like Screenshot Builder, App Website Builder, Review Monitor, and Sales Reporter. The goal of the purchase was to spur new innovation and tools developers can use to build Android apps. The financial details of Google’s purchase of Launchkit were not shared either. Google saw buying Waze as a way to eliminate the competition, and they recognized the value in the traffic-updating features of the app.
